| Armenia - Selim caravanserai |
High on the road of the Selim pass (2410m), remote from the villages down
in the valleys, Selim Caravanserai has managed to survive through the centuries
and to reach us in a remarkable state of preservation. It was built in 1332,
with defence against thieves in mind. It's a long building made of basalt,
with only one narrow entrance. Light and ventilation are provided by carved
roof openings.
The merchants used to sleep on the side naves while their animals stayed in
the central alley.
